WINS (Windows Internet Name Service) is a legacy Microsoft service designed to help computers on a local network locate each other using easy-to-remember names instead of numerical IP addresses. By translating NetBIOS names to IP addresses, WINS made it simpler for users to connect to shared resources like files and printers. However, with the rise of modern network protocols such as DNS, WINS has become largely obsolete and is rarely used in current network environments.
