YAGNI

"You Aren't Gonna Need It" - a principle against building features before there is a real need.

YAGNI stands for “You Aren’t Gonna Need It.” It is a development principle that says teams should not build features, controls, or abstractions until there is a real requirement for them. The goal is to avoid speculative complexity.

In cybersecurity, YAGNI matters because unused code still expands the attack surface. Extra modules, permissions, configuration options, and hidden workflows can introduce bugs, misconfigurations, and dependencies that defenders must patch and monitor. Attackers often look for these unnecessary paths because they are less tested and easier to misuse. A YAGNI approach helps security teams keep systems smaller, easier to review, and simpler to harden. It is especially useful when deciding whether to add optional integrations, fallback logic, or advanced features that are not yet needed. Used well, YAGNI reduces security debt by focusing effort on what the system actually does today.
