WSUS

Windows Server Update Services, Microsoft’s enterprise system for approving and distributing updates.

WSUS, or Windows Server Update Services, is Microsoft’s enterprise tool for approving, staging, and distributing Windows updates to managed devices. Instead of every endpoint pulling patches directly from the internet, administrators can test updates, choose who receives them, and control when deployment happens. That makes WSUS useful for large organizations that need consistency, bandwidth control, and rollback planning.

In cyber security, WSUS matters because patching is one of the main defenses against known vulnerabilities. Well-managed WSUS deployments help close exposure windows quickly while reducing the risk of breaking critical systems. But if attackers gain administrative access, WSUS can become a high-value target: malicious or unauthorized updates may be pushed broadly across a network. Defenders therefore protect WSUS with strong authentication, network segmentation, change control, and monitoring of update approvals and server activity.
