Windows Run

A built-in dialog for launching programs, paths, and commands quickly.

Windows Run is a built-in dialog in Microsoft Windows that lets a user launch programs, open file paths, and execute commands by typing them directly. It is meant to be a quick administrative and troubleshooting tool, so it can start local binaries, scripts, Control Panel items, or system utilities without navigating menus.

In cyber security, Windows Run matters because it shortens the path from a prompt to code execution. Attackers often abuse it in social-engineering campaigns by convincing victims to paste or type a command that starts malware, downloads a payload, or opens a malicious script. Because the action looks like a normal Windows workflow, it can bypass user suspicion and some superficial download-based defenses. Defenders watch for unusual use of Run, especially when it follows a browser prompt, a help message, or instructions to copy and paste text. User training and endpoint logging help spot these browser-to-shell transitions before they become full compromise.
