Utilization

The share of available compute or serving capacity that is actually being used.

Utilization is the share of available compute or serving capacity that is actually being used. In an AI serving stack, it shows how busy GPUs, CPUs, memory, or model pools are at a given time. Low utilization can mean wasted spend; sustained high utilization can mean saturation, queueing, and slower responses.

In cyber security, utilization matters because attack and defense both change it. An attacker can drive up utilization with request floods, expensive prompts, or abuse of API access, causing denial of service, cost spikes, or degraded model quality. Defenders watch utilization to spot overload, detect abnormal traffic patterns, and tune batching, routing, throttling, and autoscaling. Measuring utilization across workloads also helps prove whether capacity is being used safely and efficiently, instead of being silently exhausted by misconfiguration or abuse.
