Thermal resistance is a measure of how strongly a device package resists the flow of heat from the silicon to the cooler environment around it. It is usually expressed as degrees of temperature rise per watt of power. Lower thermal resistance means heat escapes more easily, so the chip can stay cooler under load.
In cyber security and high-performance computing, thermal resistance matters because heat directly affects reliability and speed. Modern CPUs, GPUs, and HBM stacks may throttle when temperatures climb, reducing throughput and changing system behavior. Defenders use thermal resistance data to choose package materials, heat spreaders, and cooling methods, and to verify performance under sustained load rather than short benchmarks. Poor thermal design can also create opportunities for stress-based disruption, where heavy workloads push hardware into throttling or instability.
