Tampering window

A short period when an attacker may have altered server-side content before it was restored.

A tampering window is the period during which an attacker may alter server-side content before the change is detected or reversed. In software delivery, this could affect update metadata, package locations, or files offered to client devices. A server that appears clean afterward does not show what it served during that earlier period.

This matters because even brief access to a trusted update path can expose clients that check for updates at the wrong time, creating a supply-chain risk. The exposure does not by itself prove that a device downloaded or ran malicious content. Defenders can investigate by preserving and reviewing historical server, proxy, DNS, and endpoint logs, including update activity and unusual processes or network connections. Vendors can reduce risk with strong cryptographic authentication and integrity checks for updates and metadata.
