A supercomputing centre is a facility that houses and operates high-performance computing systems for research, industry, or other demanding workloads. It typically combines specialised hardware with job schedulers, storage, networking, and operational staff.
These centres matter in cyber security because many users and services share valuable computing infrastructure. Defenders manage identity and access, isolate systems, authenticate maintenance, and monitor workloads to reduce the risk of unauthorised access or disruption. When specialised equipment such as a quantum system is installed, it also depends on the centre’s surrounding networks, controls, and procedures; securing the hardware includes securing those connections and responsibilities.
