Streaming

Delivery of audio or video over the internet without requiring a full file download first.

Streaming is the delivery of audio or video over the internet as it is played, without waiting for the full file to download first. This makes media feel immediate and supports live broadcasts, connected TV, and on-demand viewing. In security terms, streaming matters because it relies on web apps, content delivery networks, authentication systems, and ad-tech pipelines that can all be attacked or abused.

Threat actors often exploit streaming demand with fake “watch live” pages, malicious apps, phishing prompts, or pirated-stream sites that bundle malware and scams. Attackers may also abuse streaming infrastructure for account takeover, credential harvesting, or traffic redirection. Defenders monitor for spoofed domains, unusual playback requests, tampered manifests, and non-genuine traffic, while using encryption, access controls, DRM, and logging to protect users and measure real audience activity.
