SIM binding

A rule that links an account to the active SIM card currently associated with a phone number.

SIM binding is a rule that ties an account to the active SIM card associated with a phone number. A service may check that the SIM is present or verify control of the number before allowing account access, continued use, or recovery.

In cybersecurity, this can make some forms of account misuse harder by linking access more closely to a live phone number. It is not proof of a user’s identity on its own: phone numbers and SIMs can be transferred, replaced, or fraudulently taken over. Strict binding can also complicate legitimate device changes, travel, or account recovery. Services need to balance fraud prevention with reliable recovery and provide safeguards for users who lose or replace a SIM.
