Shell integration

the desktop mechanism that lets apps launch files or programs together.

Shell integration is the set of desktop features that lets an application work through the operating system’s shell to open files, start programs, or pass a document from one app to another. On Windows, this can include file associations, “Open with” actions, drag-and-drop, shell verbs, and command handoffs between Explorer and third-party software.

It matters because many everyday workflows depend on it. If shell integration breaks, users may not be able to open attachments, launch Office documents, or invoke the right program from another tool. From a security perspective, the same trust path can be abused: malware may register a fake handler, intercept a file type, or trigger a risky command through a poorly checked launch path. Defenders watch these integrations for unexpected associations, unusual process launches, and update regressions that disrupt normal behavior.
