Search provider

the service a browser sends search queries to.

A search provider is the service a browser sends search queries to when a user types into the address bar or search box. Common examples include public search engines, but organizations can also configure internal or privacy-focused providers. The browser usually sends the query, and sometimes related metadata such as language, region, or device information, to that service.

In cybersecurity, the search provider matters because it can affect where user data goes and who can observe it. Default search settings may expose browsing intent, create logging trails, or route traffic through a third-party platform without users noticing. Defenders manage this setting to reduce data leakage, align with privacy policy, and limit dependency on a single vendor. Attackers may abuse search settings through browser hijacking, malicious extensions, or tampered policies that redirect searches to advertising or phishing infrastructure. Reviewing the configured search provider is therefore a small but useful control in endpoint and browser security.
