Scale lens

A ranking view that favors the largest and most established ecosystems.

A scale lens is a ranking view that gives more weight to the largest and most established ecosystems. In practice, it favors places with the most companies, funding, headcount, or market reach, rather than places that may be small but highly innovative or specialized.

In cyber security, this matters because how you measure an ecosystem changes where you look for risk and opportunity. A scale lens can highlight where major vendors, mature suppliers, acquisition targets, and large talent pools are concentrated, which helps defenders with procurement, hiring, and partnership planning. But it can also hide smaller clusters that produce niche tools, offensive capability, or breakthrough defensive research. Attackers often exploit this bias by operating from smaller or less visible hubs, while defenders use scale-based rankings to prioritize monitoring of the largest attack surfaces and the ecosystems most likely to shape supply-chain dependencies.
