SASE, or Secure Access Service Edge, is a cloud-delivered architecture that merges networking and security functions such as secure web access, firewalling, identity-aware access, and data controls. Instead of forcing users through a single corporate perimeter, SASE applies policy closer to the user, device, and application.
This matters in cyber security because work now happens across home networks, hospitals, branches, and SaaS apps. SASE helps defenders enforce consistent rules for remote staff, contractors, and shared devices, even when traffic never touches the office network. In attacks, that same flexibility can reduce exposed services and limit lateral movement; in defense, it supports zero trust by checking context before granting access and by inspecting data moving through sessions. It is especially useful when organizations need to protect legitimate access without blocking normal business workflows.
