A resin vat is the container in a resin-based 3D printer that holds liquid photopolymer resin during printing. The printer exposes parts of the resin layer by layer, so the vat must keep the material clean, level, and protected from contamination.
In cyber security, the resin vat matters because 3D printers are cyber-physical systems: a compromised print job, altered material settings, or tampered workflow can produce failed parts, weak components, or waste expensive resin. Attackers do not need to “hack the vat” directly; instead, they may target the printer software, network connection, or operator process that controls what goes into the vat and how the printer uses it. Defenders care about the vat because physical inspection can reveal debris, cured fragments, or unexpected residue that signals misuse or process failure. Keeping the vat covered, clean, and restricted to authorized operators helps protect both print quality and the integrity of the manufacturing process.
