Resin cross-contamination

Unwanted mixing of one resin into another, which can affect curing and part quality.

Resin cross-contamination is the unwanted transfer of one photopolymer resin into another. In SLA and other vat photopolymerization systems, even small residues can change how a layer cures, altering strength, color, surface finish, and dimensional accuracy. The result may be a weak, brittle, or misshapen part.

In cyber security, this matters because digital manufacturing is a workflow attack surface. If an attacker can alter machine instructions, job sequencing, cleaning steps, or operator procedures, they may cause one resin to be introduced into the next build or material channel. That can sabotage parts without obvious tampering and can also hide as a “quality issue.” Defenses include resin isolation, verified purge and cleaning cycles, access control on print jobs, sensor-based material checks, and inspection of finished parts for unexpected curing behavior or defects.
