Remote exploitation

Attack activity carried out over a network connection, often without physical access to the target.

Remote exploitation is the act of attacking a vulnerable system over a network connection instead of by touching the device physically. The target may be exposed to the internet, reachable through a VPN, or accessible from another internal system. Common examples include sending crafted web requests, abusing exposed management interfaces, or triggering flaws in network services and firmware.

This matters because remotely reachable bugs are often the fastest path into a network. If a flaw requires no authentication, an attacker may be able to compromise an edge device, server, or application before defenders notice. In real attacks, remote exploitation is used to steal data, plant malware, bypass access controls, or take over appliances that sit at the trust boundary. Defenders reduce risk by patching quickly, limiting exposure, enforcing authentication, and monitoring for unusual network requests.
