Remote access account

A login used to reach systems from outside the local network, often a high-value target for attackers.

A remote access account is a user login that lets someone connect to systems from outside the local network, usually through a VPN, remote desktop gateway, cloud portal, or service-management platform. These accounts are essential for administrators, vendors, and field staff who need to work off-site.

In cyber security, remote access accounts are high-value targets because they can provide direct entry into business systems without needing to break perimeter controls. Attackers often try password spraying, phishing, token theft, or credential stuffing to seize them, then use the access to move laterally, steal data, disable defenses, or stage ransomware. Defenders treat these accounts as sensitive: they should be protected with multifactor authentication, least privilege, logging, and rapid revocation of unused or suspicious logins. In service-heavy organizations, remote access accounts can be especially important because scheduling, support, and maintenance workflows depend on them.
