An RDS snapshot is a backup copy of an Amazon Relational Database Service database. It captures database contents and can be used to restore a DB instance, clone environments, or share data with another AWS account when permissions allow. Because snapshots may contain live production data, they should be treated as sensitive assets, not simple backup files.
In cyber security, RDS snapshots matter because a misconfigured share setting can expose private data to unintended readers. Attackers and researchers alike look for publicly shared or overly shared snapshots, especially if they are unencrypted. Defenders reduce this risk with encryption, least-privilege access, monitoring for sharing changes, and rapid cleanup of public permissions. A brief exposure window can still be enough for data theft or reconnaissance.
