Rating

The step that applies pricing rules to usage data to calculate charges.

Rating is the billing step that applies pricing rules to metered usage data and calculates what a customer owes. After events have been collected and cleaned, the rating engine may apply per-call, per-minute, tiered, subscription, or outcome-based rules to each usage record. In modern SaaS and cloud platforms, rating turns raw telemetry into billable charges.

In cyber security, rating matters because it sits on the trust boundary between operational data and money. If attackers can tamper with usage events, replay records, or manipulate pricing rules, they may cause revenue loss, fraud, or billing disputes. Defenders protect rating systems with integrity checks, idempotent ingestion, audit logs, strong access control, and separation between telemetry pipelines and pricing logic. Reliable rating also helps investigations by preserving a clear trail from event to invoice.
