Public-facing application

Software or a service exposed to the internet and often targeted for initial access.

A public-facing application is software or a service that can be reached from the internet, such as a website, customer portal, API, or remote access gateway. Because anyone on the internet can contact it, it is part of the organization’s exposed attack surface and must be treated as hostile territory.

This matters in cyber security because attackers often use public-facing applications for initial access. They look for weak passwords, stolen credentials, unpatched flaws, insecure file upload features, or misconfigurations that let them enter a network without first compromising a user’s device. Defenders reduce this risk by minimizing exposed services, patching quickly, enforcing strong authentication, monitoring logs for unusual logins and requests, and testing internet-facing systems for common weaknesses before attackers do.
