Proxy node

A device that relays traffic on behalf of another system, often to hide origin.

A proxy node is a system that relays traffic for another device or operator instead of communicating directly with the final destination. The relay can mask the true source of the traffic, distribute load across multiple devices, and make network paths harder to trace. In cyber security, proxy nodes are common in anonymization networks, malware infrastructure, and abuse of compromised routers or servers.

Attackers use proxy nodes to hide command-and-control servers, route spam or scanning traffic through disposable machines, and complicate blocking efforts. A botnet may turn infected edge devices into relay points so malicious traffic appears to come from ordinary residential or small-office IP addresses. Defenders look for unusual forwarding behavior, unexpected outbound connections, and devices that begin acting like gateways rather than endpoints. Limiting exposed services, patching firmware, and monitoring egress traffic help reduce proxy-node abuse.
