Posture Assessment

Review of configuration, permissions, and policy settings to find security gaps before abuse occurs.

A posture assessment is a review of an environment’s configuration, permissions, and security policies to identify weaknesses or deviations from required safeguards. For databases, this can include checking user privileges, network exposure, encryption settings, and whether access controls match organizational policy.

It matters because insecure defaults, stale permissions, and configuration drift can leave openings even when monitoring, governance, or encryption tools are in place. Defenders use assessments to find and prioritize these gaps before they are exploited, then remediate them and repeat the review to catch new changes. It complements activity monitoring: assessment checks whether the environment is configured safely, while monitoring looks for suspicious behavior during operation.
