Platform leverage

influence gained by controlling a core distribution layer.

Platform leverage is the influence a company or attacker gains by controlling a core distribution layer such as an operating system, app store, browser, device setup flow, or default search path. Because users often accept the preselected option, the platform can shape what gets installed, opened, measured, or trusted before any active choice is made.

In cyber security, platform leverage matters because distribution control can amplify both defense and abuse. A defender may use it to enforce secure defaults, push patches, require multi-factor authentication, or block risky apps through device management. An attacker or abusive actor may exploit the same layer to steer users toward unwanted software, lock in a malicious setting, or make removal difficult. The security lesson is that defaults are not cosmetic: whoever controls the platform can strongly influence user behavior, system exposure, and long-term dependency.
