Photodetector

a device that converts incoming light into an electrical signal.

A photodetector is a device that converts incoming light into an electrical signal. It may use a semiconductor junction, photodiode, or other light-sensitive material to produce current or voltage changes when illumination changes. In practice, it turns a physical property of the environment into data that electronics can read, count, or trigger on.

In cyber security, photodetectors matter because many systems rely on light-based sensing for timing, presence detection, optical communication, and tamper monitoring. Attackers may try to confuse or saturate sensors with stray light, while defenders use photodetectors in alarms, beam-break systems, and isolation setups to detect movement or unauthorized access. Their security value depends on calibration, noise control, and resistance to environmental interference.
