Phar is a PHP archive format and extension used to package and load application files. A Phar archive can bundle code, metadata, and resources into a single file, which makes deployment convenient and lets PHP access archived content through normal filesystem-style operations. That convenience also makes Phar part of the attack surface whenever an application processes untrusted files or paths.
In security terms, Phar matters because archive parsing is complex and often happens inside the runtime. If a vulnerable code path is reachable, a malformed archive or unusual path structure can trigger crashes or other unexpected behavior, creating a denial-of-service risk. Defenders reduce exposure by keeping PHP patched, disabling unused extensions, restricting which files can be uploaded or parsed, and treating archive handling as an input-validation problem just like any other file-processing logic.
