A perpetual license is a software license that gives the buyer the right to use a product indefinitely, usually after a one-time purchase. “Perpetual” does not always mean unrestricted: transfer, resale, upgrade rights, and support access depend on the contract and on applicable exhaustion rules in the relevant jurisdiction.
In cyber security and enterprise IT, perpetual licenses matter because they are part of software asset management, compliance, and incident response. Attackers, rogue employees, or gray-market resellers may try to exploit weak entitlement records to move software outside approved channels. Defenders should keep purchase records, license certificates, email approvals, and deployment inventories under retention or legal hold, then compare them against installed software and account activity. Clear records help prove lawful use, detect unauthorized redistribution, and reduce risk during audits or disputes.
