Payroll records are employee pay and tax documents such as salary tables, direct-deposit details, withholding forms, and year-end statements. They often include names, Social Security numbers or national IDs, bank-account data, addresses, and compensation history, which makes them highly sensitive personal and financial records.
In cyber security, payroll data is valuable because it can be used for identity theft, fraudulent payments, tax abuse, and social engineering. Attackers who steal payroll archives may use them as extortion leverage, threatening to leak private employee information unless a ransom is paid. Defenders treat payroll systems as high-risk assets by limiting access, separating them from general file shares, encrypting data at rest and in transit, and logging all access. Backups, retention controls, and multi-factor authentication also reduce the damage if an account is compromised.
