Patch wave

A coordinated set of security updates released together to close multiple flaws.

A patch wave is a coordinated release of security updates that closes multiple vulnerabilities at the same time, often across related products or product branches. Vendors use patch waves to reduce exposure quickly when several flaws are discovered in one software family.

In cyber security, patch waves matter because they compress the defender’s response window. A browser, mail client, and enterprise support branch may share code, so one weakness can affect many systems at once. Attackers often watch patch waves for clues about unpatched versions or likely exploit paths, while defenders treat them as a cue to prioritize testing, deployment, and reboot cycles. Fast patching is especially important for software that handles untrusted content, because those products are frequent targets for drive-by attacks and malicious documents.
