Offset weight

An unbalanced mass attached to a motor that creates vibration as it spins.

An offset weight is an unbalanced mass fixed to a rotating motor shaft. As the shaft spins, the uneven mass shifts the center of gravity and turns rotation into vibration. This is the same basic mechanism used in simple vibration motors and bristlebots.

In cyber security, offset weights matter anywhere software controls physical devices. Attackers who gain access to a robot, phone, or industrial actuator can change motor speed or timing to create unwanted vibration, wear, or noisy behavior. Defenders also use the same principle in testing: abnormal vibration can reveal tampering, misconfiguration, or a failing component. In connected hardware, small mechanical changes can become observable signals, so motor imbalance can be both a control method and a detection clue.
