Nomofobia

Anxiety or discomfort tied to being without a mobile phone or connection.

Nomofobia is the anxiety or discomfort some people feel when they are without a mobile phone, have no signal, or cannot check messages. In cyber security, this matters because fear of disconnection can reduce caution and make users more likely to tap links, approve prompts, or respond quickly to fake alerts.

Attackers can exploit nomofobia with social engineering that creates urgency: “account locked” texts, fake delivery notices, push notification abuse, or phishing pages designed to keep a user engaged on the phone. Defenders can reduce this pressure by using clear security training, limiting unnecessary notifications, enabling offline verification methods, and encouraging users to slow down before acting on any message that demands immediate attention.
