Multimaterial printing

Printing with more than one material in a single build to create parts with different properties.

Multimaterial printing is an additive manufacturing process that uses more than one material in a single build. The printer may switch between resins, plastics, or other feedstocks so different regions of the same part can have different properties, such as rigidity, flexibility, conductivity, or chemical resistance. In resin systems like SLA, this requires careful material switching and contamination control because even small residue transfers can affect curing and weaken the final object.

In cyber security, multimaterial printing matters because the output depends on digital instructions as well as physical process control. If a slicer profile, job file, or printer controller is tampered with, an attacker could change where a material is placed, introduce weak layers, or misroute a functional material into the wrong section of a part. Defenders treat this as a workflow-integrity problem: restrict access to print jobs, verify files and machine settings, separate materials, and log every change from design to finished part. These controls help prevent subtle sabotage and quality drift in mission-critical manufacturing.
