Mount Service

A backup-related service path that can handle sensitive data and operations in Veeam Backup & Replication.

The Mount Service is a backend component in Veeam Backup & Replication that handles mounting backup data for restore, inspection, and other recovery-related operations. Because it works directly with protected backup contents, it sits on a high-trust path and may process sensitive metadata, credentials, and administrative requests.

From a security perspective, that makes the service a valuable target. If attacker-controlled input reaches the Mount Service and is handled unsafely, flaws such as insecure deserialization can become remote code execution. In real environments, defenders treat this kind of service like critical infrastructure: limit who can access it, keep it patched, and monitor for unusual requests or unexpected service behavior. Even though it is “just” a backup component, compromise here can expose the systems that are supposed to provide recovery and resilience.
