Modular synthesizer

An electronic instrument built from separate functions that can be rewired for different sounds.

A modular synthesizer is an electronic instrument made from separate building blocks, such as oscillators, filters, amplifiers, and control modules, that can be rewired with patch cables. Instead of one fixed signal path, the user assembles the sound chain manually, which makes the instrument flexible and highly customizable.

In cyber security, the term is useful as an analogy for modular software and attack chains. Attackers often combine separate payloads, loaders, and plugins so they can swap parts without rebuilding the whole tool. Defenders do the same with security platforms that plug together logging, detection, and response modules. The modular approach is powerful because it improves reuse and adaptation, but it also increases complexity: every connection is a place where misconfiguration, hidden dependencies, or unsafe extension code can create risk.
