Memory-coherent architecture

A design where CPU and GPU maintain coherent access to memory, reducing explicit data movement overhead.

Memory-coherent architecture is a hardware design in which the CPU and GPU can access the same memory with coordinated, coherent views of data. Instead of repeatedly copying large datasets between separate CPU and accelerator memory spaces, the system keeps them aligned through hardware and interconnect support. In AI and high-performance computing, this reduces latency, lowers bandwidth overhead, and helps accelerators stay busy.

From a security perspective, coherence changes how data moves and where trust boundaries sit. Fewer explicit transfers can simplify some defenses, but shared memory also means a compromise in drivers, firmware, or privileged processes may expose more of the workload at once. Defenders watch these systems closely with device isolation, IOMMU protection, signed firmware, and strict access controls. Attackers may abuse bugs in GPU drivers, memory management, or DMA paths to read, corrupt, or redirect sensitive data. In practice, memory coherence improves performance, but it also makes memory safety and platform hardening more important.
