Managed File Transfer (MFT)

Software designed to move files securely while supporting automation, auditing, and access control.

Managed File Transfer (MFT) is software built to move files securely while adding features that plain file transfer tools often lack: centralized access control, encryption, automation, logging, and audit trails. It is commonly used for business-to-business exchanges, internal data pipelines, and regulated workflows where file movement must be tracked and controlled.

MFT systems matter in cyber security because they often sit at a trust boundary, handling sensitive data and privileged workflows. If an attacker finds an authentication bypass, insecure file handling, or remote code execution flaw, the MFT server can become a foothold into the wider network. Defenders therefore treat these platforms as high-value assets: keep them patched, restrict admin access, enforce strong authentication, and monitor logs for unusual transfers or privilege changes. In practice, MFT security is about protecting both the files and the system that moves them.
