Latency is the time delay between an input and a system’s response. In audio systems, even a short delay can make speech feel unnatural because the speaker hears their own voice back too late. This is why delayed auditory feedback can interrupt fluency, create hesitation, or make a voice interface frustrating to use.
In cyber security, latency matters because many defenses and attacks depend on timing. Voice assistants, remote administration tools, conferencing systems, and authentication prompts all need predictable response times. High latency can degrade availability, confuse users, and hide security events long enough for damage to spread. Defenders measure latency to tune network paths, stabilize real-time audio, and make sure monitoring, logging, and alerting arrive quickly enough to be useful. Attackers may exploit delay by overwhelming a service, creating timing races, or abusing feedback loops in systems that assume near-instant responses.
