KNX

A building-automation standard used to connect and control smart building functions.

KNX is a widely used building-automation standard for connecting devices such as lighting, HVAC, blinds, alarms, and access-control components. It defines how controllers, sensors, and gateways exchange commands and status data across a smart building. KNX can run over dedicated bus wiring, IP networks, or gateway devices that bridge the building fieldbus to web or management interfaces.

In cyber security, KNX matters because it often controls physical systems. If an attacker reaches a KNX gateway, misconfigures a controller, or abuses a management interface, the impact can go beyond data loss and affect comfort, safety, or availability. The protocol itself is not the only concern; exposed web consoles, weak authentication, poor segmentation, and insecure remote access are common attack paths. Defenders reduce risk by isolating building networks, limiting who can reach management planes, patching gateways, and monitoring for unauthorized changes to KNX devices and schedules.
