Kernel-mode code

Software that runs with high privilege inside the Windows operating system core.

Kernel-mode code is software that runs inside the core of Windows with very high privileges. It can access hardware, memory, and security-sensitive parts of the operating system that normal user applications cannot touch. Because it sits so close to the heart of the system, mistakes or malicious logic in kernel code can affect the entire device.

In cyber security, kernel-mode code matters because attackers often try to abuse drivers or other privileged components to disable defenses, hide activity, or gain persistent control. Defenders treat this layer carefully by enforcing code integrity, signing requirements, and protections such as Memory Integrity, which helps block untrusted kernel-mode code from loading. In practice, this means older or poorly maintained drivers can become a security risk, while well-verified kernel components are a key part of Windows hardening.
