Internet exposure

The condition of a device being reachable from the public internet, increasing attack surface.

Internet exposure is the state of a device, service, or interface being reachable from the public internet instead of only from a private or segmented network. That reachability greatly increases attack surface: scanners can find the asset, probe it for weak credentials, outdated firmware, exposed management ports, or known vulnerabilities, and try to reuse it as an access point.

In cyber security, internet exposure matters because many devices are not designed to withstand hostile traffic. Internet-connected cameras, routers, and IoT systems are common examples. Defenders reduce risk by removing unnecessary public access, placing systems behind VPNs or access controls, patching firmware, using unique credentials, and isolating exposed devices from sensitive internal networks. Even a single exposed camera can become a useful reconnaissance sensor if an attacker can view or control it remotely.
