Internal configurations

Technical settings that describe how systems are built and connected.

Internal configurations are the technical settings that define how systems are built, linked, and expected to operate inside an organization. They can include service endpoints, environment variables, network relationships, routing rules, and other operational details that are meant to stay within the trust boundary.

They matter in cyber security because they reveal how an environment really works. If attackers find internal configurations on a test server, file share, or backup, they can use them for reconnaissance: mapping services, identifying dependencies, and spotting weak points for follow-on intrusion. Defenders treat these files as sensitive because even without passwords, they can expose architecture and help an intruder move faster. Good protection means limiting access, removing secrets from non-production systems, and regularly checking that test environments do not carry production-grade information.
