Information Technology (IT)

Business computing systems used for email, files, identity, administration, and other office functions.

Information Technology, or IT, refers to the business computing systems that keep an organization running day to day. This includes email, file servers, identity and access management, office applications, laptops, cloud services, and administrative networks. In most companies, IT is the environment where employees authenticate, share documents, manage accounts, and connect to internet-facing services.

IT matters in cyber security because it is often the first target in an intrusion and the easiest place for defenders to observe compromise. Attackers may steal credentials, exploit remote access, or use phishing to gain a foothold in IT, then move laterally to other systems. In critical infrastructure, a compromise of IT can become more serious if weak segmentation, reused credentials, or shared administration links allow access toward operational systems. Good defenses include strong authentication, patching, asset inventory, logging, and clear separation between IT and more sensitive networks.
