Industrial Protocols

Communication standards used for data exchange in industrial environments.

Industrial protocols are communication standards that let equipment, controllers, sensors, and supervisory systems exchange data in industrial environments. They define how messages are formatted, addressed, delivered, and acknowledged so machines can coordinate reliably across plants, factories, and remote sites.

They matter in cyber security because these protocols often support critical operations where availability, integrity, and safety are more important than speed alone. Many attacks target the protocol layer by spoofing devices, replaying commands, modifying values, or abusing weak authentication and trust assumptions. Defenders use protocol-aware monitoring, segmentation, strict access control, and logging to reduce risk. In real environments, industrial protocols also become compliance and integration points: data-sharing features, APIs, and gateways must be designed so they expose information without opening unsafe paths into operational systems.
