Industrial design

the practice of shaping products so they are functional, recognizable, and visually distinctive.

Industrial design is the practice of shaping products so they are functional, recognizable, and visually distinctive. In hardware, it covers the enclosure, button layout, ports, materials, labels, and overall form factor. Good industrial design makes a device easier to use and harder to confuse with something else.

In cyber security, industrial design matters because the physical look of a device can support trust, usability, and defense. Clear port layouts and unique casings help users spot legitimate equipment, while tamper-evident seals, recessed connectors, and robust enclosures can slow physical attacks. Attackers also exploit design, for example by building malicious USB devices that resemble ordinary peripherals or by cloning the look of trusted hardware to bypass casual inspection. Strong industrial design does not replace authentication, but it can reduce mistakes and make tampering easier to notice.
