Industrial control system

Technology used to monitor and operate physical processes such as power, cooling, and plant equipment.

An industrial control system (ICS) is the hardware and software used to monitor and control physical processes such as power generation, cooling, pumps, valves, and factory equipment. ICS environments often include sensors, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and supervisory systems such as SCADA. Unlike ordinary IT systems, ICS prioritize safety, uptime, and precise control of real-world machinery.

ICS matter in cyber security because a compromise can affect not just data but physical operations. Attackers may try to disrupt power, change sensor readings, stop cooling, or force unsafe conditions. Defenders protect these systems with network segmentation, strict remote access controls, asset inventory, monitoring, and tested failover procedures. In data centers, energy plants, and other critical infrastructure, securing the ICS layer helps keep electricity, cooling, and equipment stable even during faults or hostile activity.
