In-Path Encryption

Protection method that keeps sensitive data encrypted while it moves through a processing path.

In-path encryption protects sensitive data by encrypting it as it travels through a defined processing route, such as between an application and a database. Depending on the design, encryption and decryption may occur at an intermediary layer, so data is protected across parts of the path without requiring every application component to handle the cryptographic operations directly.

This can reduce exposure if network traffic or an intermediate system is observed or intercepted. Its value depends on where encryption begins and ends, how keys are managed, and which components can access plaintext. In database environments, in-path encryption complements controls such as access governance and activity monitoring: it can limit data visibility in transit, but it does not by itself prevent misuse by an authorized user or detect suspicious queries.
