Identity verification data

Documents or biometrics used to confirm a person’s identity, often highly sensitive if leaked.

Identity verification data is information used to prove that a person is who they claim to be. It can include government IDs, passport scans, selfies, facial templates, fingerprints, liveness checks, and other biometric or document-based evidence. Because this data is tied directly to a real person, it is often more sensitive than a password: if it leaks, it cannot be easily changed.

In cyber security, this data matters because attackers can steal it for account takeover, synthetic identity fraud, or targeted social engineering. It also creates a high-value target for phishing, insider misuse, and process abuse when support or compliance teams review requests. Defenders protect it with strong access control, encryption, audit logging, retention limits, and strict verification workflows. The goal is to make sure only authorized systems and staff can view, approve, or export it.
