Identity security

the practice of protecting accounts, credentials, and sign-in sessions from misuse.

Identity security is the practice of protecting accounts, credentials, and sign-in sessions from misuse. It focuses on making sure the right user can authenticate, while preventing attackers from reusing stolen passwords, tokens, or session cookies to impersonate that user.

It matters because many intrusions begin with valid login data rather than malware. If an attacker steals credentials through phishing, malware, or a data leak, they may be able to bypass perimeter defenses and operate as a trusted user. Identity security reduces that risk with controls such as multi-factor authentication, password hygiene, conditional access, session monitoring, and rapid account review. In defensive setups, decoy logins and other phish-back techniques can act as early-warning sensors by exposing when stolen credentials are tried. Strong identity security does not rely on one control alone; it combines detection, verification, and fast response to limit account takeover and stop misuse before it spreads.
