Identity Provider

A system that manages logins, single sign-on, and access control for users and services.

An identity provider, or IdP, is the service that authenticates users and issues the login tokens that let them access apps, cloud services, and internal systems. It often handles single sign-on, multi-factor prompts, and access policies, so one successful login can open many connected services.

In cyber security, IdPs matter because attackers target them to bypass defenses at scale. If a phishing campaign steals IdP credentials or session tokens, a criminal may sign in as a real user, create backdoors, or move into email, VPNs, and cloud consoles. Defenders watch IdP logs for impossible travel, repeated failed logins, new device registrations, consent abuse, and suspicious role changes. Strong MFA, conditional access, and rapid account review are key controls because the IdP is often the trust anchor for the whole environment.
