Hybrid infrastructure

An IT setup that combines on-premises systems with cloud services to balance control, cost, and performance.

Hybrid infrastructure is an IT environment that combines on-premises systems with cloud services. Organizations use it to keep sensitive workloads under direct control while using the cloud for scale, elasticity, or specialized services. The goal is to balance security, cost, latency, and operational flexibility instead of forcing every system into one deployment model.

In cyber security, hybrid setups matter because they expand the attack surface and the control plane at the same time. Defenders must secure identity, network paths, data flows, and logging across both environments, often with different tools and policies. Attackers may exploit weak links between the two, such as exposed APIs, misconfigured cloud permissions, or poorly segmented remote access. Used well, hybrid infrastructure supports least privilege, backup isolation, and workload placement based on risk. Used poorly, it can create visibility gaps where threats move laterally between cloud and on-premises assets.
